Alto Sax???

am currently playing on a alto saxophone finishing up my 3rd year. I have a Amati and i%26#039;m playing on a 31/2 vandoren reed. It%26#039;s not hard playing on it but i get out of breath playing low noted quickly. My mouthpiece is really old and i really could use another one. I%26#039;m not sure what type it is now but it says amati and a #5. When i play a hissing noise like a snake also appears which gets annoying. What type of mouthpiece do you recomend . I want a quality one under 100. And do you recomend i go to a sofer reed? How can i get the hissing noise out? Thanks!
Alto Sax???
Sorry, I have no answer for this becase I%26#039;ve only played alto sax for a year and I%26#039;m having the same problem: hitting the lower notes, like the low C and D.
Alto Sax???
hardness of your reed should be determined by how long you have been playing, what mouthpiece and ligature you have (particularly table %26amp; facing). there are some mouthpieces that demand a softer reed because they are so open.

i strongly suggest that you work on long tones in the low register, make sure your embouchure is solid-not slack!

a C* mouthpiece is an excellent choice, but i strongly advise you to take your instrument to a reputable music store and play it with any new mouthpiece that you are thinking of purchasing.

also; has your current teacher taught you anything about choosing reeds? the vandoren reed boxes used to come with a nice little data sheet explaining the difference between good reeds and mediocre ones.
Reply:Yea that noise is probably because your reed not fully connecting with the mouthpiece. I reccomend getting a 2 1/2 or 3 reed, don%26#039;t rush yourself on moving up on reeds, it%26#039;s better to play on a soft one when you are just beggining and you can actulally get a better tone with the softer ones (if they are better suited to you and easier for you to play). I%26#039;d reccomend a meyer 5 or 6 mouthpiece for jazz and a selmer C* (star) for other music. So, try a softer reed, (i%26#039;d reccomend 2 1/2 since youve only been playin for 3 yrs). If that dosn%26#039;t help bring your sax in for a tune up, there might be a leak.

I'm just starting to play the guitar. Im not sure what size is suitable for me? I'm 14 and 5'4?

Get a Schecter, ESP, Ibanez, PRS, or Jackson that fits. Just go try some one at a local music store.
I%26#039;m just starting to play the guitar. Im not sure what size is suitable for me? I%26#039;m 14 and 5%26#039;4?
Well, you obviously don%26#039;t need a large guitar. you need to go into a shop, sit down, take your time and see what seems comfortable to you standing up, sitting down, etc, making sure you feel good reaching for all the frets, being able to move the instrument around, and just in general feel comfortable with the overall feeling of it. Never mind name brands, and all that. You can%26#039;t play if the guitar doesn%26#039;t suit you..

Well? Which would woo you more as an audience?
Opinions on what to do in talent show.?
It%26#039;s Sara Bareilles. And I think, since that song is really awesome and Kelly Clarkson is mildly overdone in talent shows and classical music might not be exactly a %26#039;crowd pleaser%26#039; to try for %26#039;Love Song%26#039; if you really can sing and play piano at the same time. :D

Sing thrash?

How do Thrash Metal singers sing? Is there a certain throat position or exercise? I don%26#039;t want to know death metal and am having trouble finding sources on Thrash singing so any links or recommendations to books, etc would help. I don%26#039;t have a clue on how to sing Thrash, can anyone do it?
Sing thrash?
idk but whenever i listen to metal singers, its like they%26#039;re not even singing at all. they just scream out the words and say the lyrics very loudly with a touch of rock growls. idk
Sing thrash?
Thrash is not a style of singing, it is a genre of music and has more to do with the instruments and lyrics than the way one uses one%26#039;s voice. There is no %26quot;how to sing thrash%26quot; per se, you just use the voice you have, so yes, anyone can do it.

Read more about thrash here:

Reply:Well I%26#039;m A Guitarist who can scream and sing. It takes hard work to scream though most %26quot;Normal People%26quot; (Haha) think its stupid. First you might wanna sing normally with vocal lessons to build strength, and then like I have been suggested, take the Zen Of Screaming DVD Course, It%26#039;s taught by a girl, but for some reason everyone says its really good haha.
Reply:DO NOT SCREAM. It could damage your vocal chords, there is some kind of dvd about punk/death metal singers. The correct way to do it involves using a different part of your throat or something.

Im learning to play the guitar right?

and the way im learning to READ the music is by %26quot;Tabs%26quot;

Reply:TABS is NOT READING MUSIC... TABS is just TABS... At your level, it would take you no more effort to learn how to read REAL MUSIC and the plus is, you can get all the information you miss if all you can do is play TABS.

Do yourself a favor LEARN HOW TO READ MUSIC... for one thing... you can pick up ANY piano score and play it and not have to try to find someone to translate it into TABs for you
Reply:ill show you :)
Reply:i really wish all beginning guitarists and drummers and bassists would all just learn to read actual music instead of tabs. from tabs all you get is which fret or drum or symbol to hit. from music you get all that and you get the duration of the note. anyone can play tabs. it makes playing easy and boring and it doesnt always sound right.

I wanna Play on Electric Guitar, But No Experiance, Do i have to start on normal Guitar?

no, i started on electric, mostly blues, then added on an acoustic style and the rest is history
I wanna Play on Electric Guitar, But No Experiance, Do i have to start on normal Guitar?
naw thats fine. you can start on either.
I wanna Play on Electric Guitar, But No Experiance, Do i have to start on normal Guitar?
its better if you start with an acoustic coz you need to develop calluses. an acoustic guitar%26#039;s strings develops calluses faster than electric guitar%26#039;s but you don%26#039;t really need to start with an acoustic. joan jett started with an electric guitar and she%26#039;s like #98 of rolling stone%26#039;s best guitarist. she%26#039;s like one out of two women in that list.
Reply:No way! Electric guitar are better for everyone. Even You!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

:D
Reply:I suggest that you first get a Acoustic Guitar. If you go for a electric, you will be paying a lot more for a decent brand and quality guitar. Where as if you get a Acoustic, you don%26#039;t pay as much for a decent one and if you decide to give up guitar after a year or so, You won%26#039;t lose too much money.
Reply:Yes you should...start in studying guitar chords then practice it on the acoustic guitar
Reply:nah start on what you want

because if you want to play electric dont waste your money on an ascoutic

ppl only say start on ascoutic bcos its harder to play an on a electric guitar you can sort of fake it sounding good you know?

go for the electric just as long as your not going from electric to ascoutic

good luck

and rock on!
Reply:Theres barely a difference.
Reply:listen buddy....i play guitar so i should know.

the best guitar to start on is an acoustic guitar, and make sure it has nylon strings. ASHTON is a good beginner brand.

and by the way, if your wondering when you can start electric....it depends on your progress...could be 6 months or it could be 1.5 years. ask your teacher if your ready.

remember, acoustic, and nylon strings
Reply:DO WHAT YOU WANT THE MOST. Seriously, when I started on my electric guitar, everyone else would say, START ON ACOUSTIC, but I HATED acoustic guitar, at least back then. Now I have gigs, compliments all the time, can play ALMOST every song i hear, make my own songs, yadayadaya, and It%26#039;s been less than two years. The most important thing is you Practice a heck of a lot, see if you can get lessons, because I regret being self-taught, and have fun. May I also suggest you check the site ultimate-guitar.com out? Hope I helped
Reply:you don%26#039;t have to but if you start on electric its very possible this will happen: you will be playing and you will think you are playing perfect and sounding awesome. but in reality what you just played was a fast, and horrible guitar solo. that happened to someone i know and now he pretty much hates the world because someone told him that he sucked

What Concert to major scale- Alto Saxophone - E Flat Instrument?

Well I already know the 12 major scales by notes and stuff, but my band teacher is going to test us by telling us to play the concert pitches scale. i.e. _____, play the F Concert major scale(which would be D Scale for the alto sax). By the way, I have only experienced with 1 year of alto sax, and I%26#039;m only 13. So please treat me like a beginner player.

Thanks.
What Concert to major scale- Alto Saxophone - E Flat Instrument?
when your teacher says a concert pitch, move down 3 half notes.
What Concert to major scale- Alto Saxophone - E Flat Instrument?
heres how transposing instruments work,...Eb alto sax means when you play a %26quot;C%26quot; you hear a concert Eb! so every other note is going to be the same interval from concert sounding pitch. concert Bb=written G

concert D=written B and so on,...

the easiest trick to find which scale you need to play, if your director calls out any scale-you play the scale that starts on the 6th note of the scale he calls for.
Reply:Eb instruments are transposing instruments.

What this means is that when you are playing with a piano or a flute (non transposing instruments), if your band director were to say %26quot;Play a C%26quot;, both of you would be playing a different note! The piano would be playing a %26quot;C%26quot;, but you would be playing a note that SOUNDS like %26quot;Eb%26quot;, even if you are fingering a %26quot;C%26quot;.

If he says %26quot;Play a CONCERT C%26quot;, then any transposing instruments must change their notes. So for CONCERT pitch, piano would still play a %26quot;C%26quot;, but you would play an %26quot;A%26quot;. Then, both of the notes would SOUND the same.

If your instructor gives you a CONCERT Bb... count down 3 half steps... Bb to A (1), A to Ab (2), Ab to G (3). You would play a G.

If you know your circle of fifths, you can just think about the relative minor and that%26#039;s the note you start on... if not, don%26#039;t worry about it for tomorrow, but it%26#039;s something you should learn!

Good luck- and have fun!

Why cant i sing anymore?????

I dont know whats wrong with me. i havent been sick or anything...and i used to sing all of bleeding love perfectly and now i cant sing any of the high notes. i only sing at home and i know that i didnt over use it. its bothering me cause i love to sing! help. i tried drinking water but it didnt help me at all. i can sing low notes as i did before but eh high notes are history. help!!!!!
Why cant i sing anymore?????
if you are an adolescent, your voice may have changed. that happens. there is nothing wrong with being an alto.

if you are not a trained singer, you may have damaged your voice.

go to this website for more info:

http://www.nidcd.nih.gov/health/voice/vo...
Why cant i sing anymore?????
cause you could never sing
Reply:Well you may naturally have a low range and your body is trying to tell you that. Since you said that you only sing at your house, your voice is probably not strong enough to continually reach those high notes. Also you may have overdone it. You may not think that you were pushing or straining but you can%26#039;t see what your vocal cords were doing and they may have been banging together quite hard (which is a VERY bad thing)

If you rest your voice you may be able to regain some of your top range.

If you are serious about being a singer you may want to consult an ENT (Ears Nose and Throat) doctor who can look at your vocal cords and may be able to help you.

Hope things work out well!
Reply:hahahahaha, go to singing lessons or something.

maybe you just never sang well %26amp; your ears changed haahahah, suckah
Reply:The female voice is very strange in how it changes. A lot of change can be expected throughout middle school and high school where some notes will be lost in every range but will later return. Unlike guys though, women%26#039;s voices can continue to change throughout their lives, both in going lower and higher... just listen to early Modanna verses her later work to hear how her voice has dropped. But there are other cases where women%26#039;s voices do slowly get higher over the years- and they can often continue to swing back and forth.

The best advice I can give you is to work on how you produce your sound. Use good breath support and vowel placement and you will be able to keep a lot more notes than you realize- but expect that this is a fluid process for most women.

Talent show song help!!?

id try lil wayne, or 50 cent...lol jk, try any girl bands, or like taylor swift i think her name is...
Reply:natasha bedingfield....thats a good one.

search her songs so you can hear what she sounds like!
Reply:You should sing something like Green Finch and Linnet Bird from Sweeney Todd, that is sung by a young girl and isn%26#039;t provactive. There are 2 different keys for this song. One that is super high and one that is lower.

Another good song would be anything from Les Mis, there is also a young girl in that show, its very depressing but beautiful music.

Also the new broadway show The Little Mermaid has great new songs in it that Ariel sings. I just love the new songs they added to the show.
Reply:There are plenty of Alto-Soprano 2 pieces that are appropriate for a 6th grader. DO NOT perform anything that is Rap, or too modern. I suggest something like Bette Midler, or Sarah McLachlan, their voices seem to fit well with the underdeveloped voice. Good Luck!

Do you think I could learn drums in a year?

If I choose to splay drums I would need to know them in a year for a school band.

Would I be able to do it by next year? I can choose to play either rythem guitar or drums. I think the rythm guitar would be easier but I like drums.

What do you think?
Do you think I could learn drums in a year?
First, see if you can sign up for some drum lessons with a good and experienced teacher. They could also evaluate your knack and or talent
Do you think I could learn drums in a year?
well i play guitar myself and it took a while to learn, with a pro teacher.

but with drums i taught myself i normal rock beat in a day.

imagine what you could do with a pro teacher and a year. you will be great

:):):) and im 13
Reply:I have been playing drums for just under 2 years, but after a year of lessons I was playing to a decent standard.

I think drums is a great instrument to play, and I%26#039;ve really enjoyed playing it. School band standard would be possible in a year, but you would have to work hard at it.

The other thing to think about is whether your parents will let you have a drum kit, because they are quite noisy. Or you could go for the option I took, which was to buy an electric one, which is much more expensive, but quieter and better in the long run.

Good luck, whichever you choose.

Reply:yes u can
Reply:Your voice vibrates too much, it shows that your breathing is not stable. Try not to slide your voice when singing high notes, just hit the note. You sounded quite unstable in your high notes where you have to sustain. You also went a little off tune actually. Other than that, your voice is quite nice and you have no problem switching your voice. With loads of training, you will be able to solve all your problems. Good luck !

I did go to some place in Salmiya to learn but it was crap the teacher was barely ever there and he just plays the song infront of me and tells me to learn it at home... I wasted money and I was better off learning by myself.

How can I learn to improv solos on the guitar?

I have been playing for about 9 years, and I feel pretty comfortable technically. I can learn an existing solo and play it after some practice. But I%26#039;m totally inept when it comes to improv. I usually just end up playing the same two riffs of the pentatonic scale over and over. Do you know of any great resources (online or otherwise) in this area? I%26#039;m looking for a very comprehensive %26#039;start to finish%26#039; type of instruction.
How can I learn to improv solos on the guitar?
Ok here we go,

1. Learn the Pentatonic %26quot;box%26quot; --which it sounds like you already know. Their are 5 different positions for this box though. You need to memorize the shape of all of them. It will take a while to play smoothly in between them. Here is a good article on how to get started on that :

http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/lessons/g...

2. Memorize all the notes on the guitar. You should be able to look at the 11th fret G string and instantly know that is an F#, that sort of thing. Their is a very good program i found that will help you do this. It is called Absolute Fretboard Trainer. It took me about 6 weeks (20 min a day) to really know the fretboard instantly. Learning this will make your solos stronger. You will be able to play the same note that the chord is on at that time. Great players like David Gilmour do this to make solos really stand out and have that perfect for the song sound.

3. Once you have the Pentatonic boxes down--you can add 2 more notes to the pentatonic scale. The 2nd and 6th degree. This is called a diatonic scale. Everything will be in the same place as you were playing the pentatonic scale but you will just have 2 more notes that are added in. Once you memorize the scales with these 2 added notes, you can start working with modes. Modes will allow you to play music from any genre, not just the rock or blues genre like the pentatonic scale does.

*Keep in mind this is not an easy task. Depending on how serious about it you are--this could take years or months. The hard part is getting started.....once you get down all the pentatonic boxes you will start to see your reward.

Grant M- Are you serious man? Trust me if you really want to go from an intermediate guitarist to a great one these are the steps you need to take. Don%26#039;t go by some %26quot;learn to play in 2 weeks method%26quot;. 90% of rock songs use the pentatonic scale--so i don%26#039;t know what this Grant M is talking about. Like I said once you master the pentatonic scale and add the 2 extra notes creating the diatonc scale you will be able to play whatever you want. (flamenco, jazz, classical, bluegrass, whatever you want.)

Here is good website for scales:

How can I learn to improv solos on the guitar?
Learn as many scales as you can, listen to a lot of music, and solo over your favorite songs.
Reply:Okay, first thing, don%26#039;t listen to what the first guy wrote. You don%26#039;t want to learn out of the pentatonic boxes unless you want to sound like some 15 year old from a terrible garage band. Or Ace Frehley for that matter. The most valuable thing you can do is to memorize all the positions of the C scale. I%26#039;m only referring to it as the C scale because that is the scale the guitar is set up for. These positions can be moved up and down all the way on the neck to play in any key you want to. What you need to buy is the Ron Greene Dial for soloing. It has all the positions you need to learn, and shows you where to play them for every key. It also has some back tracking so you can solo ontop of other guitars playing rhythem. If you learn these positions, you will be soloing like a pro in no time at all. I%26#039;ve been playing for about 6 years, and my musical abilities have changed completely ever since i learned this about a year and a half ago. It makes improv solos a lot of fun and really easy.

dose this seem like a good mouthpiece ofr a person wiht 3 years of palying alto?http://cgi.ebay.com/GOTTSU-KOHAKU-BAMBOO...
Alto saxophone mouthpiece?
ive been playing alto for almost 5 years. i use classic rubber mouthpieces, which i really like, so i%26#039;d recommend the selmer c star.
Alto saxophone mouthpiece?
no.
Reply:No. For that amount of money you can get a superior quality rubber mouthpiece- maybe two.

Alto Saxophone reeds?

In your opinion which reeds get the best sound ect. ?
Alto Saxophone reeds?
You%26#039;d be best off to ask this question on the community board at Saxontheweb.net.
Alto Saxophone reeds?
my favorite is rico, the standard ones in the orange box.

2.5.
Reply:Hi there :) The reeds that I have always used and liked are the Vandoren. Now depending on how long you have been playing and the strength of your embouchure... you might want to get the 3 1/2 or 4 strength reeds. But you mentioned sound? I think one of the more important factors for a good sound is your set up .... your mouthpiece and ligature. Another consideration is the type of playing you do. Jazz.. pop... classical... There are great jazz mouthpieces, both hard rubber and metal that would not really work for pop or classical. I have a suggestion that you might want to consider. Look up Woodwind and Brasswind on google. Give them a call and ask for a Woodwind catalog to be sent to you. It%26#039;s free. In the saxophone section you will find the brands they carry and they will be described for the type of music they are designed. This will give you an idea of what might really meet your needs. Also, you can save money with Woodwind and Brasswind. Cheaper than the local music stores for sure. Hope that I was able to help. :)

Broken Lyon Bass fix, new, or compensation?

I recently received a lyon double cutaway electric bass that was broken at the back of the fretboard (new, unopened). It plays all the notes fine but it seems fragile and the strings are an extra 4 inches above the board and makes it hard to press on my left hand.

Does anyone know if Lyon (by washburn) has return policies for gifts or without recipts. Or is there the possibility of saving the bass with repairs?

I want to be a professional guitarist someday so.........?

Should I attend a college or should I just take lessons somewhere?
I want to be a professional guitarist someday so.........?
BOTH; music theory, band, private lessons, music appreciation etc etc. all you can do.

also take business courses and psychology courses. The more education you can get the better and always, and I mean ALWAYS, have something you can eat and pay rent on because as I write this answer, there are countless extremely TALENTED musicians out there starving to death and being evicted for not paying rent.
I want to be a professional guitarist someday so.........?
ok in college major in something else u like. there is only a small chance that u will be a musician so if u dont become successful u have another job.
Reply:definantly both. you really should go to college, as a backup plan. also take lessons so you can get good. there is a 1/4 chance anyone can make it in the music industry
Reply:There are infinite paths to what you desire. No one, including yourself can predict the right way to go about something.

Known and accepted methods of getting somewhere are always a good thing to involve yourself in. If someone wants to become a lawyer, they must complete undergraduate school and go to law school. If you want to be a doctor you need to study human biology, go premed and then medical school.

Becoming a guitarist just isn%26#039;t as clear cut. You can attend a 4 year music college- Berklee or Juliard- and be no closer to becoming a musician than if you spent those 4 years making musical contacts, playing out and becoming the best player you can.

So do both of those things, or whatever you feel is working for you. Try to keep your mind on the goal- that you want to become a guitarist. Don%26#039;t be distracted too much by the scene, the drugs, the women, etc... That may all be there, but you know that there is a bigger picture, you don%26#039;t want to stop your progress there, happy to be admired by the bar crowd, you need to always remember that you want to be professional- meaning you%26#039;re in and out, playing your best, not drunk and sloppy, always learning more, always listening to music, and always ready to make the jump to the next level.

Because the path never ends it just changes. And as long as you%26#039;re ready to go with it, you%26#039;ll continue to grow.

Songs for the audition?

Hi! i really need help. what%26#039;s a nice song to sing in an audition? i%26#039;m auditioning in this organization in the university i%26#039;m studying in. its like a pop band but its a big band that needs like 5 vocalists and i was wondering if ya%26#039;ll can suggest a song i can sing. even though its old school its ok as long as its nice to sing. i%26#039;m an alto and i have an average range. i wanted to sing something like my heart by paramore but that%26#039;s too old. anyway thanks again!
Songs for the audition?
Let it Be by the Beatles
Songs for the audition?
Hmm, I think it%26#039;s nice to sing high songs in an audition to impress them. But in your case, I think you can sing any good song. Tattoo by Jordin Sparks is cool.
Reply:Ever Ever After- Carrie Underwood (if you%26#039;re a good belter)
Reply:I think you should sing something classic but something that will show off your voice for the audition. Maybe something from Pat Benatar.
Reply:somewhere over the rainbow

or

a song from joseph

or

a song from oliver-if he needs me

or whatever its called
Reply:It actually depends on the audition.

If you%26#039;d like a little rock, then %26#039;All Around Me%26#039; by Flyleaf.

%26#039;Bleeding Love%26#039; is a great song for more slow auditions.
Reply:Yeah, %26quot;All Around Me%26quot; (Flyleaf) would be a great song.

But, I have to disagree with you. %26quot;My Heart%26quot; is not an old song. And if you can do alto, this would be a good song for you!

And if you want to sing it, do it! Paramore (and My Heart) is what got me the lead vocalist and rhythm guitar part in my band! Great choice!

I've been playing the guitar for years and I'm no good!?

Granted, I only practice a little bit here and there, and I don%26#039;t take it seriously, but when I bought the guitar like, ten years ago I assumed that I%26#039;d gradually get better and better. I am better than I used to be but the progress is painfully slow. I can only play songs that use major chords A, C, D, E, F, and G (Well, Am and Em too...). And solos are a mystery to me.

I guess I%26#039;ll keep playing it for my own entertainment, but is there a better way to learn? Or are some people just too lame to play this instrument? (I was a good drummer back in the day but my Dad always told me the drums are not a musical instrument. LOL)

I%26#039;d be interested in hearing about others experience...how long did it take to become good at it and how much did you practice?
I%26#039;ve been playing the guitar for years and I%26#039;m no good!?
Say good-bye to it.
I%26#039;ve been playing the guitar for years and I%26#039;m no good!?
you have to PRACTICE. its that simple. a little bit here and there wont make you good. duhh. i practice at least an hour a day and ive been playing for 3 years.
Reply:if you want to be better, you definitely have to practice more.

in order to play the guitar without any problems, you have to study regularly for at least seven years. in fact, it never stops; you%26#039;re never %26#039;%26#039;secure%26#039;%26#039; that you can play the guitar excellently. you have to practice and practice.

you can enroll to a music school, if your job or other responsibilities allow. and if, of course, you want to be a better player.
Reply:Would you get into a boxing ring without lessons? Get some lessons, you will be AMAZED at what they can show you. But in either case PRACTICE scale and chords and DON%26#039;T BE AFRAID of BARRE CHORDS.

tip; any chord in the open position can go up the neck, for instance Am that you already know. . . put your first finger over the nut and use the rest of your other fingers to make the chord. NOW, move your 1st finger from the nut to the 1st fret, make the chord again, Bbm!! Now you can add B flat minor to your chord collection, one more fret Bm, 3rd fret Cm, so on and so forth.

ANY of your open chords will do this.

PRACTICE,PRACTICE keep it fun and PRACTICE.
Reply:u have t keep practicing. and u have to practci more than just the major and minor chords. try different rythms with them and try changing through them faster.

ask your teacher (if u have a teacher) to teach u some scales and songs. but not just minor and major scales. but scales like pentatonic, blues scale, mixlodian. there are a lot more. but if u dont have a teacher just search on google the names or %26quot;how to%26quot; and then the names.

and if u like rock and things u have to learn some power chords. if u dont have a teacher u can search that too. u can probably go to youtube and search basic power chords.

o and barre chords.

but the main thing is just PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE!
Reply:Practise for 20-30mins a day for a year.

themn u rock!
Reply:Well, other than getting a teacher, there is no other way to get better but practice.

Solo%26#039;s are more of a complex thing to learn. One of the major things about solo%26#039;s are scales. The most common soloing scale is the Pentatonic scale, which is used in alot of solo%26#039;s from other people especially people like Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Jimi Hendrix, e.t.c. The pentatonic scale is very simple, depending what key your in, it may vary, but, from the fifth position (or fret) it is simply:

e-----------------------5-8-5---------...

B-------------------5-8-------8-5-----...

G--------------5-7-----------------7-5...

D----------5-7------------------------...

A------5-7----------------------------...

E--5-8--------------------------------...

That scale, from the fifth position, is probably one of the most easiest, yet common used scale by guitarists. Now of course, there are other scales such as arpeggio, harmonic minor, lydian, dorian, the list goes on. Yet the pentatonic is very versatile, and easy to work with. Of course, soloing is just not about being fast. You can play just this scale in any key, without tremolo picking, or sweep picking, or any of that stuff. You can just play this scale, and make it sound good. Heck, a solo can be just a chord progression.

It took me a long time actually to get where I am today on the guitar. I currently have about two decades of guitar experience, and I%26#039;m in a so called %26quot;Famous%26quot; band. It took me years of practice, years with teachers, and it took alot of time and money. But it was worth it. My parents saw how devoted I was to the guitar (Which is, by the way, the key thing playing any instrument, devotion and commitment), and they knew I was heading into a musical career. I was practicing my guitar day and night, I%26#039;m not like Zakk Wylde practicing even when I%26#039;m sleeping (I heard Zakk practices his guitar when he goes to the bathroom). But you do need at least like 5 hours of practice every day to get REALLY good. I mean I started when I was like 7, or 8, and really had little knowledge of anything. Now, 20 years later, I%26#039;m able to play stuff from Michael Angelo Batio, Jimi Hendrix, DragonForce, Steve Vai, and that%26#039;s because I devoted myself to the guitar, and committed to myself. It really all just takes time being good, and you can%26#039;t just become one day, just practice, practice, and practice some more. Remember, practice makes almost perfect.

-Nakayama Akira
Reply:uh .. i have played as much as 8 hours to 12 hours a day... and still try to play at the minimum of 1 hour each day...
Reply:I would recommend against lessons. I take lessons bu my teacher has a preconceived notion of what I can and cannot play. When he says a song is too hard for me, I just look it up online. I find I get much better that way. Try http://www.ultmte-guitar.com for tabs
Reply:So I don%26#039;t think the problem is that you need to play more or have a teacher or anything definitive like that.

What you lack is drive and intent to become better. If you want to become good or at least improve at a steady, if slow rate, you need to want it.

Whether you practice for 10 minutes a day or 3 hrs, doesn%26#039;t matter as much as what you do with that time. If you just play around with the 10 chord voicings you already know you%26#039;ll never get much further.

If instead, you have intent to improve, you%26#039;ll find yourself a book or 2, a teacher, or some info on the internet and learn things that are entirely new to you. Also it%26#039;s important to listen to music and listen very closely. Then learn what you hear, note by note and chord by chord. Take as long as you have to in order to get it right.

It%26#039;s not easy, but if you enjoy playing guitar it%26#039;s the most satisfying feeling you%26#039;ll ever experience.
Reply:Dude, I%26#039;ve been playing for 5 months, and I%26#039;m even better. Practice, practice, practice, or else you%26#039;re waisting your time. I%26#039;m already able to play songs like Stricken by Disturbed, all because I practice minimum an hour a day. You have to find more time for yourself.

What am i .lowest note G three octaves below middle C.highest note is the regular highest for a mezzo soprano?

i think u have a good range...

u culd probably b nething, idk...tough question
What am i .lowest note G three octaves below middle C.highest note is the regular highest for a mezzo soprano?
I think you need to count again: the G three octaves below middle C is lower than the lowest note on a standard piano. If you can truly sing that note, then you are not a singer, you are a candidate for the Guinness Book of World Records.
What am i .lowest note G three octaves below middle C.highest note is the regular highest for a mezzo soprano?
What%26#039;s your strongest range then? Only you yourself know the answer. A %26#039;singer%26#039; with such an enormous range is not likely to be taken seriously in the musical world...

Is your low G anything more than an indistinct croak? Does your treble clef register sound pleasant, or do you have to shriek it out? Are you even in tune there? Don%26#039;t be like those amateurs who claim that they have four and a half octaves of range or more, only to be debunked because the extreme ends of their range aren%26#039;t their singing voice at all.

Assuming what you said holds true, you could be a countertenor, meaning you have a strong falsetto and are able to sing both high and low registers.
Reply:Basso Profundo (I think) up to contralto, which is any male voice other than a castrado (ouch!) that goes above a tenor.

Any good ambient bands?

I%26#039;ve been looking for some really good ambient bands, but I haven%26#039;t really found any.

I was thinking of something that sounds like:

What are good acting classes in chicago and voice lesson classes?

I am not sure about voice lessons except maybe the old town school of music?

For acting Second City has a great acting and improv program that can take you from no experience to working on in house productions within a year or two. Second City Training Center is at north ave and wells st in Chicago. SecondCity.com is their web site.

Piven center in Evanston also has a lot of very well known and accomplished classes that have been developed by Jeremy Piven%26#039;s mom who runs the school there.

Check them all out to see what is affordable and will work for your goals.

Good voice coaches in chicago???

i really want to start singing but i want some lessons first

Which danelectro distortion is better?

ok im getting a danelectro for my friend for his birthday. and he like just started so danelectro is good price for beginners. and he wants a metal one but not just metal. like one if u play around with the knobs u can get a rockish sound (like ac/dc).

so i wanted to know if the Danelectro D-3 FAB Metal Effect Pedal is better or the Danelectro DJ-21 Black Coffee Metal Distortion Pedal. i have been searching reviews on the internet and they all say FAB metal is better but i wasn%26#039;t sure.

if u own it tell me please.

thanks

Hey lots of good reviews at Harmony Central.

D-3 Fab Metal link: http://reviews.harmony-central.com/revie...

DJ-21 Black Coffee Link: http://reviews.harmony-central.com/revie...

The D-3 does get a slightly better rating on sound quality and better on overall.

I%26#039;m a guitarist but have never used these effects so I can%26#039;t give a personal review. But I%26#039;ve trusted and been happy with these reviews (given that you need to see what%26#039;s up with the reviewer sometimes they get overly emotional or sound kind of not %26quot;right%26quot;).

What the best way to start acting?

My dream is to be on broadway sooo bad but need to get up there.
What the best way to start acting?
I have been taking drama in school ever since kinder-garden up till grade 10. I am now in grade 11, but I stopped taking it. If there are ever any school plays, try to get a part in it, even if it%26#039;s a small part. I don%26#039;t know if you are still in school or not, but university and college both offer dramatic arts. You can also try going up in front of friends and family and act out something. If you are shy, a great way to get rid of that is by consistently presenting something small in front of people as well, as it takes away your fear. Make sure you have fun doing it, and it doesn%26#039;t feel like you%26#039;re being forced to do it.
What the best way to start acting?
Do a lot of community theatre and school musicals. This will help you build your resume and help your performing skills.
Reply:Take drama, join school plays, then when you are ready get an acting coach. You should probably go to college and major in Theater Arts.

What book should i get to better my trumpet playing?

im a high school marching band trumpet player i want better tone quality and to extend my range. please help
What book should i get to better my trumpet playing?
Try Advanced trumpet solos volume one by Robert Nagel along with the cd. It should help improve your technique and performances.
What book should i get to better my trumpet playing?
There are tons of books out there so i cant suggest one book, but i can tell you what to look for.

If you want better tone and range look for a book that has all of the scales, and I mean ALL (major, minor, chromatic, pentatonic, etc.) the scales. It should also have warm-ups in it like most books. Stay clear of the books that just have only songs in it. The book should focus on scales. Now when you do find a book just practice out of it at least 20 min a day.

Good luck playing.
Reply:get an arbans book. it is a staple for good trumpet players.
Reply:There%26#039;s a book called Concert%26#039;s and contests.

It has some great solos.

It%26#039;s printed and published by Rubank.

It starts out easy and then gets harder and harder.

I think you%26#039;ll like it. It helped me.
Reply:you don%26#039;t need a book. play long tones- a LOT of long tones. at least half an hour a day. for range, pick a starting note and play up chromatically, as high as you can, and hold the notes out. then play down as far as you can. important: when you%26#039;re having trouble with a note, its very easy to just skip over it and go to one you can play well. dont do that, it doesnt help at all.

What does 8p5 or the little star mean on these guitar tabs??
i would say it is for a pull off of the note on the 8th fret back to the note on the 5th fret... you should hold the fret 5 with your finger 1 and hit the fret 8 with finger 4... pick the note and release your finger while still holding the note on fret 5... and the x2 means you play that section two times
What does 8p5 or the little star mean on these guitar tabs??
8p5 means you pick on the eight with a finger already on five then you %26quot;pull off%26quot; (take your finger or the eight allowing a small amount of sound to come from the five)

the x2 means to repeat the section twice

How to improve my cello skill??

i know how to play violin and piano too so i can read music and i%26#039;m good at it. do you have any suggestions about improving my cello skills? actually i want to do it on my own without any lessons, etc. so is there any websites or books you can suggest???
How to improve my cello skill??
A word of caution for you... You must eventually pick either the violin or the cello. At the beginner level it%26#039;s still ok, but the techniques for the violin and cello are ultimately contradictory in nature.

I was the principal cellist of my high school string orchestra. My stand partner learned both the cello and the violin, and she was technically very weak - she would apply violin technique (wrongly) to the cello, such as wrapping the thumb around the neck.

For a start, always remember the fundamental differences:

Left fingers

Cello: perpendicular to string

Violin: at an angle to string

Shape of left hand

Cello: C shape

Violin: V shape (neck resting on crook of your thumb)

Left thumb

Cello: behind neck

Violin: on other side of neck

Bow

Cello: more weight needed on the bow arm (this comes from the elbow)

Violin: more horizontal movement, bow held at a steeper angle than cello

Practising would be the same for both instruments. Techniques which apply to the violin (eg. slow practice, taking a fast passage in strange rhythms) also apply to the cello.
How to improve my cello skill??
I agree with the poster above. I%26#039;m learning the violin right now and I have to throw out everythign I know about the cello in order to do so. yes, they%26#039;re both strings, but no, you can%26#039;t use one to help the other. Not really. They%26#039;re unique instruments that require entirely different attentions. If you%26#039;re going to do both you%26#039;ll have to set aside time to do both. My friends who play violin and viola won%26#039;t play viola on the day they have to perform on violin. And they are more similar than violin and cello.

I%26#039;ve taken a look at the teachers online. They are less than extraordinary let me tell you. Find a student teacher at a university. They%26#039;re cheap and they can get you started properly.

The venue im going to for warped tour says no cameras, should I bring it anyways?

Im going on July 12th to the bicenntenial park, and i even called the venue and they said no cameras...should i bring it anyways?
The venue im going to for warped tour says no cameras, should I bring it anyways?
I might go there too on the same date.

Oh and, why would you bring one if they said not to?

It%26#039;s probably going to get stepped on or broken.
The venue im going to for warped tour says no cameras, should I bring it anyways?
Why would you do that? Do you WANT to get kicked out or have your camera seized and taken away from you? There%26#039;s a reason for the %26#039;no camera%26#039; rule and you can either respect it or cancel your trip.
Reply:if you bring a camera make sure it is not one you are attached to in case they confiscate it!

i haven%26#039;t been to warped tour so i don%26#039;t know if they let it go once you%26#039;re in or if they take it, if you get it back.

i know at concerts i%26#039;ve been to they search you on the way in and if they find one they confiscate it and give it back after the show (though i think they just got in a huge bin and everyone whose camera was taken have a free for all).

but then once you get in if you take pics they don%26#039;t really do much about it but again that could be different at warped tour.

and if you do bring it in, smuggle it in case they pat you down, because they probably will for weapons and a camera and stuff. and they may check a purse or backpack or anything like that.

just depends on how secure they are.

you could also just take pics a camera phone.. they don%26#039;t usually confiscate phones.
Reply:no definitely not what is the point if they are going to kick you out
Reply:every concert i go to the ticket say no cameras... but in all honesty they dont really care enough to take EVERYONES camera. Try tucking it in your bra when you walk in so that they dont notice it.
Reply:the past warped tours ive been to only banned professional cameras (ex- dslr cameras) and honestly they seemed more concerned if you had water bottles with removable caps and dumb stuff like that than if you had a crapy digital camera. it can really go either way- you can hide it while they search your stuff (it%26#039;s really quite low-key, not a big deal at all) and sneak a couple pictures (just be wary of security guards- try to cover it with you hand) or you can just not bring it. camera phones are a good alternative too.
Reply:i would take it. ive been to plenty of shows that didnt allow them. if they do a little search or whatever then just hide it. usually they dont even care. and then when you start taking them snap shots you only have to take the flash off, but thats only if you%26#039;re in the front of the guards who are against the stage. so i would take mine and if they said take the flash off id do just that.. then put it back on later or record it. :]

I%26#039;m looking for some decent riffs to play on guitar. Please help. Kirsty.
What are the easiest riffs to play on guitar?
The easiest riffs fall into 2 categories. The blues is easy to play and learn/copy becuase the riffs are all based on the blues pentatonic scale. There are only 5 notes. In any given key the notes are 1,b3,4,5 %26amp; b7.

So in the key of C the notes would be C, Eb, F, G, Bb. Go listen to some blues players you like, or check out BB King, Eric Clapton, Albert King, Bo Didley, the list goes on and on...

Figure out what key you%26#039;re in. Many blues songs follow a I, IV, V structure. In the Key of C the I is C, the IV is F and the V is G. Many times the chords will all be 7th chords. This means they have a flat 7th tone instead of a maj 7th.

So establish what the I chord is and you%26#039;ll have your key. The pentatonic scale starts on the same note as the I chord. Just playing the notes in order doesn%26#039;t make licks, but listening to what the %26quot;greats%26quot; are doing and then copying them as best as you can will teach you tons of licks.

The other thing is to find players YOU already like, ones whose music you are really familiar with. Using the same scale as a starting point, try and figure out what your favorite artists are doing. So much of popular music is based on blues that the pentatonic scale can be a great launching pad, just listen carefully and you%26#039;ll find the %26quot;in-between%26quot; that the artists play.

Good luck!

Smoke on the water,

Higway to hell,

Enter sandman,

Stairway to Heaven. (SP?)

Layla (SP?)

The Trooper.
Reply:LOL! definitely sandman, ironman, a lot of Greenday%26#039;s stuff. They just make it seem more than it is...just turn on the overdrive....and try somethings harder or you won%26#039;t get better. : )

What is percussive strumming?

I need to know real bad
What is percussive strumming?
Percussive strumming, often used on acoustics, is when you use the strings rhythmically instead of just harmonically. Often achieved by by muting the notes you%26#039;re holding with your left hand- you can mute by laying down the soft part of your right hand down against the strings and then strumming percussively. You can also mute strings with your left hand by not pressing the strings all the was down. Sometimes this is difficult to execute and if you%26#039;re near the 5th, 7th, or 12th frets you%26#039;ll likely hit harmonic tones instead of muting.

Okay am a 15 year old guy. I really wanna work on my vibrato. I know sing from your diaphragm & breath suport.

And I sing classical music (theatre). But I can never get my vibrato any ideas? or help?
Okay am a 15 year old guy. I really wanna work on my vibrato. I know sing from your diaphragm %26amp; breath suport.
Vibratto is one of those things, you either have it or you don%26#039;t. Dont lose hope though, a male%26#039;s voice changes many many times. Vibratto doesnt develop untikl about 17-20 yrs old. If you dont develope vibratto, there are also ways to %26quot;fake%26quot; it, but they dont always sound great. Good Luck!

First, make sure you know what the textbook definition of vibrato is. If you were to go to %26quot;Grove%26#039;s Dictionary of Music and Musicians%26quot; it would say that it is a rapid fluctuation of PITCH, not volume. A rapid fluctuation of volume is %26quot;tremolo%26quot;, and quite frankly, that%26#039;s what most singers do. Great %26quot;classical%26quot; singers use vibrato - most %26quot;belt%26quot; singers in musical theatre don%26#039;t.

So, while diaphragmatic breathing is a must for singers, vibrato is accomplished in the larnyx.

The best way and the most rewarding is to play along with tracks by your favourite band, as long as they aren%26#039;t too complicated! It takes time but right the notes down for a reminder and just keep rewinding and starting again until you work out the notes and get it right. I first did this when I was learning bass with Killing Joke and Jimi Hendrix live. Good fun and very rewarding as you learn about different styles of playing and makes you appreciate bass players more.

Good luck and have fun!

Get a microphone, because internal mics usually suck. Get some recording software, and a program you can use to make beats, or a keyboard, a 1/8 to 1/4 output converted, and a male/male audio cable (has an earphone jack on each side).
